Forum: audio Subject: Question about deleting items

I have a question about items that are deleted. Can the identifier be re-used? I have some recordings here that are not linked to my account any more, and thus I cannot "Edit Item" to replace files with better quality files.

Take, for instance, this.

http://www.archive.org/details/dso20060204

I have better .wav files, and 4 more files to fill out the rest of the concert. Alas, I cannot edit this. Is the best way to go about doing so to request the item be deleted? (I'm not doing that right now, I'm just asking).

Thanks.

i'd just create a new item, upload better quality files and link to that item in old item`s reviews.

Hi Eric, even if the old item is removed from a collection, its identifier is stored in the system as already used. But, it is possible nowadays to rename an item as long as the new name doesn't overlap with something else! So, we could rename some old item from say "uso2005" to "uso2005old". After some time for the system to catch up, I assume the prior id would look available again. Want to try? What is an old id of yours we could use as an example to recycle?

Ah, so does that mean there is no way to delete an item that I have erroneously uploaded ... yikes :-) ... I couldn't seem to find any way to rename the item name (is that the metaname?) ... so I just reposted it correctly at 20080602GottmilkPodcast-WhatsMine (Simply changed the date).

Thanks,

Diana, can we try renaming one of the things I listed above?

Hi Diana, thanks for the reply.

These are the ones that I need renamed to something else.

dso20060204
uso20050129
dso20061007
uso20060304
uso20060603

After that I can put all the new files up.

Thanks a lot!

- Eric

OK, I just queued up the change for all five of those to have the suffix "old" eg
uso20060603 --> uso20060603old

Theoretically that should free up eg uso20060603 for your re-creation today. (Cross fingers!)
